Gallagher joins Birmingham on loan

Southampton striker Sam Gallagher has joined Birmingham City on a season-long loan, the club has announced.

The 21-year-old, who signed a new four-year-deal in July, chose the Blues after it was reported fellow Championship clubs Aston Villa, Wolves and Derby County had also been chasing him.

Gallagher, who scored 12 goals while on loan at Blackburn Rovers last season, will link up with former Saints manager Harry Redknapp at St Andrews.

Southampton were keen for the forward to get regular game time and will hope the move to Midlands club can give him that.

The loan leaves the Saints with just three first team strikers – Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin and Shane Long.
