Southampton 0-0 Swansea City – Three Standout Players

Southampton and Swansea shared the points on the opening day, despite the poor result there were some positives for Southampton

Southampton started the game well but found it difficult to take their chances. Swansea sat back and soaked up pressure and tried to hit Saints on the counter but it came to no prevail. Here are three players I thought stood out for Southampton

Jack Stephens:

It was another solid game for the English centre back and he earned his first clean sheet of the season. Tammy Abraham looked dangerous all game and Stephens managed to keep him quiet despite a couple of slight mistakes.

Nathan Redmond:

Nathan Redmond scored his first goal for Southampton last year in the opening day of the season but it couldn’t be this time around. Redmond was definitely one of our most creative players against Swansea and many of our clear cut chances came through him. Redmond and Cedric linked up together really well but had no goals to show for it.

Oriol Romeu

Another fantastic game from our Spanish defensive midfielder. The signing of Mario Lemina has been said to free up the pressure on Romeu, but the record signing didn’t play against Swansea so we yet again saw Romeu dominate the Southampton midfield and keep out what was a fairly strong Swansea attack.
